Wisdom for the day…

The goal of the desert was utter transparence to divine light… In desert spirituality the point was the development of humility and obedience, rather than penitence and pardon.

from Praying with the Desert Mothers (page 61)

“In desert spirituality the point was the development of humility and obedience, rather than penitence and pardon.” So I guess the next question is, Obedience to who or what? Does a person fail to have humility if he speaks out on a topic that weighs on his conscience? Is he failing to be humble?

I read that as obedience to God… the desert abbas and ammas went to the wilderness seeking union with God because they did not find God in the city. Interesting, huh?

The desert need not be a physical location… a spiritual desert can just as easily reside in the midst of a convoluted institution. We recognize those people of humility and obedience just as we recognize those without these virtues.

In the end, who do we trust? The one with the conscience formed through suffering and struggle? Or the one with the conscience formed with rhetoric and dogma?

You decide. And then choose which one to imitate.

What do you think? Love to hear from you.
